Eligibility Criteria for ICMR-NIRT Project Technician:
Education Requirements:
- Project Assistant (Field Investigator) – Applicants must have a graduate degree in Life Science from a recognized university, along with three years of work experience from a recognized institution. Alternatively, candidates may possess a Master’s degree in Life Science.
- Project Technician II (Health Assistant) – Applicants must have completed High School or an equivalent qualification, and should possess five years of work experience in a health-related field from a government institution or recognized institute. Intermediate with Science subjects and B.Sc. qualifications will be considered equivalent to two and three years of experience, respectively.
Age Limit:
- Project Assistant (Field Investigator) – The age of applicants should not exceed 30 years.
- Project Technician II (Health Assistant) – The age of applicants should not exceed 28 years.
Candidates may be eligible for age relaxation as per Government rules. For further details, refer to the official notification of ICMR-NIRT 2023.
Salary Details:
- Project Assistant (Field Investigator) – The selected candidates will receive a salary of Rs. 31,000/- per month.
- Project Technician II (Health Assistant) – The selected candidates will receive a salary of Rs. 17,000/- per month.
Selection Process for ICMR-NIRT Project Technician 2023:
Candidates will be selected based on a walk-in written test/interview.

Interested and eligible candidates who possess the essential qualifications mentioned above may appear for a walk-in interview at the Institute. Candidates must bring all original and self-attested copies of their certificates/testimonials, along with a valid identity proof (Voter ID card/PAN Card/Driving License/Passport/Aadhar Card) and one passport size photograph. Candidates will not be allowed to appear for the interview without the original certificates.
ICMR-NIRT: Advancing TB Research in India
The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (ICMR-NIRT) is a leading research institute dedicated to the prevention, control, and elimination of tuberculosis (TB) in India. Established in 1956 as the Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre, the institute has since then evolved into a multidisciplinary research center focusing on TB and related diseases. The institute is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and is funded by the Indian government’s Department of Health Research and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
ICMR-NIRT has been instrumental in advancing TB research in India and has contributed significantly to the global fight against TB. The institute’s research activities cover various aspects of TB, including epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and drug resistance. The research is carried out by a team of scientists and researchers who are experts in their respective fields.
Epidemiology Research
ICMR-NIRT conducts epidemiological research to study the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors associated with TB in India. The institute has carried out several large-scale population-based studies to understand the burden of TB in different parts of the country. These studies have provided valuable insights into the epidemiology of TB in India and have helped in the development of effective TB control strategies.
One such study conducted by ICMR-NIRT is the India TB-Diabetes Study. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of diabetes among TB patients in India and its impact on TB treatment outcomes. The study involved more than 5,000 TB patients across the country and found that diabetes was prevalent in one-fifth of the patients. The study also found that TB treatment outcomes were worse in patients with diabetes, highlighting the need for integrated TB and diabetes care in India.
Diagnosis Research
ICMR-NIRT is actively involved in developing and evaluating new diagnostic tools for TB. The institute’s research in this area focuses on the development of rapid, accurate, and affordable diagnostic tests for TB that can be easily used in resource-limited settings.
One of the institute’s notable contributions in this area is the development of the TrueNAT TB test. This test is a rapid molecular diagnostic test that can detect TB in less than two hours. The test is easy to use and does not require any specialized laboratory infrastructure, making it suitable for use in remote and resource-limited areas.
Treatment Research
ICMR-NIRT’s research in TB treatment focuses on developing new and improved treatment regimens for TB, particularly drug-resistant TB. The institute conducts clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of new TB drugs and treatment regimens.
One of the institute’s most significant contributions in this area is the development of the Bedaquiline drug. Bedaquiline is a new drug that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). ICMR-NIRT played a key role in the clinical trials that led to the approval of Bedaquiline. The institute also conducts research on the optimal use of Bedaquiline and other new TB drugs in the treatment of TB.
Drug Resistance Research
ICMR-NIRT’s research in drug resistance aims to understand the mechanisms of drug resistance in TB and develop strategies to overcome it. The institute conducts research on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in TB and uses this knowledge to develop new diagnostic tools and treatment regimens.
ICMR-NIRT has established a state-of-the-art BSL-3 laboratory for the study of TB drug resistance. The laboratory is equipped with the latest technology and facilities for the culture, isolation, and characterization of drug-resistant TB strains. The institute also collaborates with other research institutions and organizations to conduct research on TB drug resistance.
