About this Company
Larsen and Toubro Ltd, commonly known as LandT, is an Indian multinational conglomerate with business interests in engineering, construction, manufacturing, technology, information technology and financial services, headquartered in Mumbai.
The company is one of the five largest construction companies in the world.
It was founded by Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro, two Danish engineers who fled to India.
As of 2020, LandT Group consists of 118 subsidiaries, 6,associates, 25 joint ventures and 35 jointly operating companies engaged in heavy engineering, construction, real estate, capital goods manufacturing, information technology and financial services.
Three main products/services LandT is involved in are: construction and project related activities; manufacturing and commercial activity; and engineering services.
For management purposes, the company has been divided into five broad categories: Construction: This includes buildings and factories, heavy civil infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, power transmission and distribution, water and wastewater treatment, metallurgy and materials handling, and intelligent world and communications; EPC Projects: These include hydrocarbon engineering, power and energy developments; Manufacturing: This includes defense equipment and systems, heavy machinery, construction, mining and industrial machinery, industrial valves, and electrical and automation systems; Services: real estate, information technology, technology services and financial services;Other: Hyderabad Metro, infrastructure development projects and other corporate functions .
Larsen and Toubro emerged from a company founded in Bombay in 1946 by two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro.
The company started as a representative of the Danish producers of dairy and related products.
Gear However, with the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and the subsequent blockage of trade lines, the partners set up a small workshop to carry out work and provide services on
plants.
The German invasion of Denmark in 1940 stopped the supply of Danish products.
The war’s need to repair, refit and degauss ships presented LandT with an opportunity and led to the formation of a new company, Hilda Ltd, to carry out these operations.
LandT also began repairing and manufacturing ships, indicating the company’s expansion. The sudden internment of German engineers in British India (due to WWII suspicions) who wanted to install a soda plant for the Tatas gave LandT an opportunity to get into the installation space.
In 1946 ECC (Engineering Construction and Contracts) was founded by the partners; The company at that time focused on construction projects (currently ECC is the construction division of LandT).LandT started several co-operations abroad. By 1947 the company represented British manufacturers of equipment for making products such as hydrogenated oils, biscuits, soaps and glass. In 1947, the company signed a contract with the Caterpillar Tractor Company, USA, for the distribution of earthmoving machines.
At the end of the war, a large number of Caterpillar machines from war surpluses were available at attractive prices, but the necessary finances exceeded the partners’ budget capabilities.This prompted them to raise additional equity and on 7 February 1946 Larsen and Toubro Private Limited was formed.
After India’s independence in 1947, the company established offices in Kolkata (now Calcutta), Madras (now Chennai) and New Delhi. In 1948, 55 acres of uncultivated swamps and jungles were acquired in Powai, Mumbai.
In December 1950, LandT became a public company with a paid up capital of 20 lakh (equivalent to £19 million or US$2.5 million in 2020).
The sales turnover this year was Rs. 1.09 billion (equivalent to Rs. 102 billion or US$13 million in 2020). and renamed LandT House, its current headquarters.
In the 1960s companies included UTMAL (established 1960), Audco India Limited (1961), Eutectic Welding Alloys (1962) and TENGL (1963).
In 1965 the company was selected as a partner for the construction of nuclear reactors.
In fact, Dr. Homi Bhabha, then Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), first came to LandT in the 1950s to manufacture critical components for nuclear reactors.
Holck-Larsen, a friend with whom he shared an interest in art that the company could, indeed had to, provide. Since then, LandT has been instrumental in contributing to India’s nuclear program…Holck-Larsen was once asked by a junior engineer why LandT should start building nuclear power plants when companies in the US and Germany were losing money on nuclear work. He replied: “Young man, India needs to build nuclear power plants. , who will do it?In the 1970s, LandT was commissioned to work with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Its then President, Vikram Sarabhai, chose LandT as a manufacturing partner.
When India launched its space program in 1972, the company was invited to participate. In 1976, ECC submitted a bid for a major airport project in Abu Dhabi.
However, ECC’s balance sheet did not meet the requirements of the financial rating offer.So it was merged with LandT.
ECC eventually renamed itself LandT Construction and now accounts for the majority of the group’s annual turnover. In 1985, LandT partnered with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
LandT was not yet authorized by the government to manufacture defense equipment, but was allowed to participate in design and development programs with DRDO.
After the design and development was complete, the company had to hand over all drawings to DRDO.
The government would then assign the manufacturing work to a public sector defense unit or armaments factory for manufacture.
After a series of successes and positive political initiatives, today the company produces a variety of weapons and missile systems, command and control systems, engineering systems and submarines. via DRDO.
