Applications are invited from Indian citizens, using the prescribed format, for recruitment on an ad hoc and consolidated pay basis.
The Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, located at No.30/95, P.S.K.R.Salai, R.A.Puram, Chennai – 600 028, is seeking qualified and eligible candidates to fill the following posts:
- Research Fellow
- Salary: Rs. 45,000/- per month
- Research Assistant
- Salary: Rs. 30,000/- per month
Age: Candidates must not have attained the age of 36 years as of 01.07.2023 (i.e., candidates should not have been born before 02.07.1991).
Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Research Fellow / Research Assistant:
- For the post of Research Fellow, candidates should be a Post Graduate in Law (under 10+2+3+3+2 or 10+2+5+2 pattern) from recognized Indian Union universities, duly recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.
- For the post of Research Assistant, candidates should be a Graduate in Law (under 10+2+3+3 or 10+2+5 pattern) from recognized Indian Union universities, duly recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.
Candidates pursuing Post Graduate Degree in Law or any other degrees or programs requiring their compulsory attendance elsewhere are not eligible to apply for the assignment as Research Fellow / Research Assistant.
Candidates must possess computer skills, including the ability to retrieve information from various search engines, processes, online law journals, etc.
Candidates applying should not have been involved in any criminal case, whether convicted or against whom criminal trial proceedings are pending. A declaration in this regard shall be made by the candidate.
Period of Assignment and De-Assignment of Research Fellow / Research Assistant:
- Fellows / Research Assistants will be ad hoc appointees, and their engagement shall be initially for a period of one year on a contract basis from the date of their assignment.
- This can be extended for a further period of not exceeding one more year based on performance, subject to the approval of the Hon’ble Chief Justice or Board of Governors of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy.

Judicial Academy, Chennai: Additional Information
The assignment of any Research Fellow/Research Assistant at the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Chennai, is subject to authorization by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the High Court of Madras.
However, the discontinuation of the assignment may occur before the completion of one year without prior notice.
It is important to note that Research Fellows/Research Assistants should not be construed as employees in either the Madras High Court Service or the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy.
Conditions and Notices:
- Research Fellows/Research Assistants intending to leave the assignment within one year must provide a three-month notice.
- The submission of applications is to be done through the prescribed format downloadable from the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy (www.tnsia.tn.nic.in) or the Madras High Court recruitment portal (www.mhc.tn.goy.in).
- No application fee is applicable.
- Applications, along with required documents, should reach “The Registrar (Recruitment), High Court, Madras — 600 104,” via Registered Post by 31.11.2023, 05:00 p.m.
Application Process:
- Incomplete applications or those not adhering to the prescribed format will be summarily rejected.
- No separate acknowledgments will be sent, and the Madras High Court will not be responsible for postal delays.
- Applicants must review the ‘Guidelines for Appointment of Research Fellow and Research Assistant in the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy’ available on the Madras High Court recruitment portal.
Selection Process:
- A Committee of Hon’ble Judges/Board of Governors will assess candidates based on academic records, co-curricular achievements, and performance in Viva-voce.
- Large applicant pools may result in shortlisting based on academic and co-curricular achievements.
- The Research Fellow/Research Assistant is expected to maintain a high standard of reputation and integrity during the assignment.
- No right or preference for employment in the Madras High Court Service is conferred upon the Research Fellow/Research Assistant.
Viva-voce and Posting:
- Selection for Research Fellow and Research Assistant positions will be based on Viva-voce conducted in Chennai.
- No request for a change of venue will be entertained.
- The selected candidates will be posted at the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Chennai-28, or at a location determined by the Board of Governors.
Certificate of Physical Fitness:
- Candidates selected for appointment must produce a Certificate of Physical Fitness from the competent authority.
General Instructions:
- Research Fellows/Research Assistants cannot practice as Advocates during their assignment.
- Employment or engagement in any capacity is not permitted during the assignment.
- Applications under the Right to Information Act regarding the selection process will not be entertained until completion.
- The decision of the High Court of Madras is final and binding.
