Education is an essential requirement for any profession, and the legal field is no exception. The qualifications required to become a practising advocate or pleader in India are specific and stringent. To qualify for this profession, one must be an Indian citizen and hold a degree in Law from a University in India established or incorporated by or under a Central Act or a State Act or an Institution recognized by the University Grants Commission or any other equivalent qualification. They must also be enrolled as an Advocate under a State Bar Council established under the Advocates Act, 1961.

In addition to the above requirements, a practising advocate or pleader in India must also have at least three years of experience practising as an Advocate or Pleader in the High Court or Courts subordinate thereto, as per the High Court’s Notification for recruitment to the post. Alternatively, they must be an Assistant Public Prosecutor having not less than three years of experience as an Advocate and/or Assistant Public Prosecutor on the date of notification.

Fresh law graduates can also become advocates or pleaders if they meet specific requirements. To be eligible, a fresh law graduate must possess a degree in Law from a recognized University mentioned in Clause – [(I) (ii). (a).] above. They must also be eligible to be enrolled as an Advocate and have secured an overall percentage of 50% marks in acquiring such a Law Degree in case of open categories and 45% marks in respect of other reserved categories. A fresh law graduate refers to a person who has obtained the Degree of Law within a period of three years prior to the date of notification.

Madras High Court has released an official notification for the recruitment of Civil Judge post. The application process will begin soon and interested candidates can apply online through the official website of High Court of Madras. The recruitment is for both Practising Advocates/ Pleader/ Assistant Public Prosecutors and Fresh Law Graduates. The total number of vacancies and other details will be announced soon. Age Limit:

  1. For Practising Advocates/ Pleader / Assistant Public Prosecutors – For SC, ST, OBC 25 years to 40 years, Others 25 years to 35 years

Salary Details: Civil Judge – Rs. 27,700 – 770 – 33,090 – 920 – 40450 – 1080 – 44,770/-

Selection Process: Madras High Court will follow the following process to select the candidates. (i) Preliminary Examination (ii) Main Examination (iii) Viva–Voce Test.

Application Fee/Exam Fee for Madras High Court Civil Judge: Examination fee is – Rs.2,000/-. Total Fee exemption for All Women candidates, Persons with Disabilities and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Mode Of Payment Of Examination Fees: After submission of application, the applicant shall take printout of ‘Challan’ that is generated and remit the requisite fees along with service charges levied by the bank before the last date prescribed for remittance of fee, at any branch of Indian Bank. The branch concerned will retain the Bank Copy of the ‘Challan’ and return the “Applicant Copy” and “High Court Copy” to the applicant, which shall be retained by the applicant and the “High Court Copy” shall be scanned and the same shall be uploaded in the recruitment portal of the Madras High Court and it can be cited for all future references/disputes, if any, regarding the payment of fee.
