Are you a passionate technologist with a strong interest in Linux and Customer Success? If so, this is your chance to kick-start your career with Canonical and provide technical support to both customers and Canonical staff. Join our team and work alongside industry experts who are dedicated to technology and continuous learning.

Role Description:

As an entry-level technologist at Canonical, you will be responsible for delivering exceptional technical support to our employees and customers. From problem identification to resolution, you will take ownership of cases, managing them through to completion. When necessary, you will collaborate with colleagues or involve senior engineers for assistance.

Your day-to-day tasks will involve providing technical expertise, effective communication, and a service-oriented approach. You’ll make judgment calls to prioritize customer issues and maximize your efficiency. Additionally, you’ll allocate time for learning about our latest products and technologies to enhance your professional growth. Participation in training sessions, team gatherings, and company events will also be expected.

Key Areas of Accountability and Responsibility:

Your daily duties will include:

  1. Working remotely from your home office to provide technical support for employees.
  2. Offering technical onboarding support for new employees.
  3. Providing information security training for new employees.
  4. Delivering technical and infrastructure support during international events.
  5. Ensuring security monitoring for employees is in place and maintained.
  6. Taking ownership of new cases via telephone, email, and web.
  7. Acting as an internal customer advocate, providing timely updates.
  8. Handling support requests in accordance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to achieve maximum customer satisfaction.
  9. Contributing to a common knowledge base and keeping it up to date.
  10. Drafting and distributing technical notices for internal and external communication.
  11. Prioritizing tasks to address the most important and urgent issues first.
  12. Continuously learning as our products and services evolve.
  13. Maintaining regular communication with the local and remote team members.
  14. Identifying and suggesting opportunities to enhance service delivery.

Required Skills and Expertise:

To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications:

  1. A bachelor’s or equivalent four-year degree in a technical field (Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, etc.) from an accredited college or university.
  2. Experience in a Linux-based environment gained through university subjects or work experience.
  3. Proficiency in Linux, including installation, troubleshooting, and basic configuration of recent Ubuntu Desktop releases.
  4. Familiarity with basic desktop Linux usage, including tools for editing files, web browsing, managing internet connectivity, and setup of peripherals.
  5. Basic troubleshooting skills, such as collecting logs and editing configuration files.
  6. Knowledge of safely installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, and repartitioning machines with multiple operating systems and recovering broken installations.
  7. Understanding of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Applications, and Single Sign-On.
  8. Ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, and handle the demands of a customer-facing role.
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Recommended Additional Experience:

The following experience is not mandatory but would be beneficial:

  1. Some knowledge of programming languages such as bash, Perl, Ruby, Javascript, C, C++, or Go.
  2. Basic troubleshooting skills for Mac and Windows operating systems.
  3. Experience supporting virtualized environments (KVM, OpenStack, Virtual Box, VMWare).
  4. Familiarity with containers (LXD/LXC, Docker, Kubernetes).
  5. Proficiency in network troubleshooting.
