Tamil Nadu Fibrenet Corporation Limited (TANFINET) is a state-owned company established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2007 with the objective of providing high-speed internet connectivity to government institutions, educational institutions, and other public facilities across the state. TANFINET operates under the Department of Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu, and is responsible for the implementation, operation, and maintenance of the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network (TNSWAN).
The TNSWAN project was initiated in 2007 to provide a high-speed data communication network to connect all government offices, educational institutions, and other public facilities in the state. The project was implemented by TANFINET in collaboration with various agencies and vendors, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and RailTel Corporation of India Limited. The project was funded by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Department of Information Technology, and the Government of India.
The TNSWAN network comprises of an optical fiber backbone with a total length of more than 32,000 kilometers, connecting all districts and taluks of Tamil Nadu. The network also includes last-mile connectivity through wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and WiMAX.
