About NWDA :

The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. It was established in the year 1982 with the objective of carrying out studies and surveys on the feasibility of interlinking of rivers in the country, preparation of feasibility reports, and implementation of inter-basin transfer of water projects. The NWDA has its headquarters in New Delhi and regional offices in various parts of the country.

The main objective of the NWDA is to develop and manage water resources in a sustainable manner to meet the growing demands of the various sectors of the economy such as agriculture, industry, and domestic use. The agency is responsible for the implementation of various water resource development projects, including river interlinking, water conservation, and management, construction of dams, canals, and other water-related infrastructure.

One of the major projects undertaken by the NWDA is the interlinking of rivers. The idea of interlinking rivers was first proposed in the 1970s as a solution to the problem of water scarcity in some parts of the country and floods in other parts. The project involves linking rivers across the country through a network of canals and reservoirs, with the aim of transferring surplus water from one basin to another, where it is needed. The interlinking of rivers project is expected to provide many benefits, including irrigation, drinking water supply, hydroelectric power generation, and flood control.

The NWDA has prepared a detailed plan for the interlinking of rivers, which involves the construction of canals, reservoirs, and other water infrastructure across the country. The plan has been divided into two main components – the Himalayan Rivers Development Component and the Peninsular Rivers Development Component.

The Himalayan Rivers Development Component involves the interlinking of rivers in the Himalayan region, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Mahanadi basins. The plan involves the construction of a network of canals and reservoirs to transfer water from the Himalayan rivers to the water-deficient regions of northern and western India. The project also includes the construction of dams and hydropower projects to generate electricity.

The Peninsular Rivers Development Component involves the interlinking of rivers in the peninsular region, including the Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, and Mahanadi basins. The plan involves the construction of canals and reservoirs to transfer water from surplus basins to deficient basins, as well as the construction of dams and hydropower projects.

The interlinking of rivers project has been a subject of controversy and debate in India. While some experts believe that the project is necessary to address the country’s water scarcity problem, others argue that it will have adverse environmental impacts and will be a costly and impractical solution to the problem.

Apart from the interlinking of rivers project, the NWDA is also involved in various other water resource development projects. The agency is responsible for the construction of various dams, reservoirs, and canals across the country to provide irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. The agency also undertakes studies and surveys on water resource management, conservation, and augmentation.

The NWDA has implemented various projects across the country, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam Project, the Indira Gandhi Nahar Project, and the Ken-Betwa River Link Project. The Sardar Sarovar Dam Project is a multi-purpose project on the Narmada River in Gujarat, which provides irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. The Indira Gandhi Nahar Project is a canal system in Rajasthan, which provides irrigation to the desert areas of the state. The Ken-Betwa River Link Project involves the construction of a canal to transfer water
